Honourable Willie T.C. Okolieogwo Imo State's Association of Local Government Chair and representative of Oru West Local Government Area, alongside Barrister Tony Umezurike from Owerri North Local Government Area and other association members, announced today, November 24, 2023, the readiness of Imo State government, under Governor Hope Uzodimma, to conduct the much-awaited local government council elections.
This revelation unfolded during a press conference held at their Secretariat Okigwe Road, opposite Government College, Owerri, Imo State.
Okolieogwo, attributed the delay to the prior Imo State gubernatorial election, stating that it had concluded, allowing space for the local council election to proceed.
The media's queries on election conduct, allegations of rigging, and unheld elections in certain wards were met with deliberate responses from the Chairman. He stressed the importance of substantiated claims in cases of alleged irregularities, noting that dissatisfaction often arises when results do not align with opponents' expectations.
Commending Governor Hope Uzodimma's widespread support across all 27 local governments, the Chairman acknowledged the electorate's clear preference, contributing to the Governor's victory.
He praised the Governor's sportsmanship and urged collaborative efforts among all election participants for the state's advancement.
Addressing concerns about food security, the Chairman reassured the public, highlighting the administration's distribution of free fertilizers to farmers across all 27 local governments.
On matters of insecurity, infrastructure, and local government fund allocations, Hon. Willy Okolieogwo clarified the federal government's direct allocation of local government funds and stressed their appropriate utilization.
He also emphasized the Governor's initiatives in renovating health centers across all 305 wards, showcasing significant progress during his tenure. While acknowledging logistical hurdles initially in Orsu Local Government, he affirmed the overall peaceful voting process.
