Owerri, Imo State, 4th July, 2024  - The Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare has announced the re-arrest of Chinagorom Ukaegbu, who was seen in a viral video assaulting a widow with a cutlass.

The video, which surfaced on social media two months ago, has prompted widespread outrage and demands for justice.

The Honorable Commissioner, Hon. Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu (UNJP), made the announcement during a press briefing on July 4, 2024.

She credited the Governor's wife, Barr. Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, for her directive to investigate the incident thoroughly, leading to the re-arrest.

The assault, which took place in August 2023, showed Ukaegbu attacking the widow and throwing her into a gutter, resulting in severe injuries.

Ukaegbu also attempted to harm her son, who intervened to protect his mother. Initially arrested and detained for six weeks, Ukaegbu was released and continued to threaten the victims.

Upon review, the ministry's legal unit discovered procedural flaws in the initial case handling, prompting Ukaegbu's re-arrest. He is now scheduled for re-arraignment on July 17, 2024.

Commissioner Ugwu emphasized the ministry's dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring justice. She warned violators of human rights to desist or face legal consequences.

Barr. Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, a vocal advocate for women's rights and against harmful widowhood practices, has been instrumental in this case.

Her directive to the ministry highlights her commitment to safeguarding vulnerable citizens.

The re-arrest and forthcoming prosecution of Ukaegbu demonstrate Imo State's firm stance against gender-based violence. The leadership shown by the Commissioner and the Governor's wife has been praised by human rights activists and the public.

As the case proceeds to court, the citizens of Imo State and beyond watch closely, anticipating justice and hoping this serves as a deterrent to future perpetrators of gender-based violence.
