A team of Veterinary Doctors from the state has been deployed to carry out a state-wide free Anthrax vaccination across the 27 Local Government Areas of Imo State. This initiative is made possible through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Project (L-PRES) in collaboration with the Imo State government.
This was contained in a press release signed by Director, Veterinary Services, Dr. (Mrs.) Chika I. Chukukere
The vaccination exercise which commenced last week is expected to reach the most remote villages and rural communities in Imo State for comprehensive coverage and protection of livestock.
This vaccination program followed a flag-off ceremony held in the state in September 19, 2023 by the Hon. Commissioner for Livestock Development, Hon. Dr. Anthony C. Mgbeahuruike, with full sponsorship and support from the Executive Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma.
Anthrax vaccination is a vital annual exercise required to protect both animals and humans from the deadly zoonotic disease, anthrax. This infection poses a significant health risk due to its ability to affect both humans and animals, with high morbidity and mortality rates. In the light of the recent anthrax outbreak reported in Nasarawa state this year, L-PRES has taken swift action to initiate this large-scale vaccination campaign across some selected states of the federation including Imo State.
In an effort to protect the Imo citizens from infectious and zoonotic diseases, the state government through the Ministry of Livestock Development, initiated free anthrax vaccination programme in 2023. This year's vaccination programme which is being coordinated by L-PRES and Imo government will act as a booster dose to the first vaccination and this will enhance the immunity of the previously vaccinated animals. Imo people and animal herders across the state are being encouraged to make their livestock available for this all important exercise.
