The Abia State Police Command has recorded yet another major breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat criminal activities, as operatives apprehended three suspects for offences ranging from conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms to gunrunning and attempted murder. The operation also led to the recovery of dangerous weapons and live ammunition in different parts of the state.

According to a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen C. Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, the first arrest followed a coordinated intelligence-led operation by detectives from the Central Police Station, Umuahia, on 17th October 2025.

The operatives, acting on actionable intelligence, intercepted one Kalu Ugwa Ogbonnaya, a 54-year-old man, linked to a cargo consignment with Waybill No: HN-INT-7320Do-FDY-U. Upon inspection, the consignment was found to contain twenty-six live cartridges and a carton housing a pump-action gun with Breech No: MY1183234. Further search of the consignment uncovered another Mossberg 930 pump-action gun with Breech No: AFO44698, along with fifty additional rounds of live cartridges, all addressed to the suspect.

During interrogation, Kalu confessed that the items were meant to be received by Agu Ugochukwu, a 39-year-old man who has since been arrested. He further revealed that Agu was acting on behalf of another accomplice currently residing in the United States. Both suspects are presently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Umuahia, as investigations intensify to unravel the full network behind the arms trafficking.

In another development, on 23rd October 2025, the Police Scorpion Squad in Aba responded swiftly to a distress call that led to the arrest of Ukandu Leach, 43, for allegedly shooting one Chukwu Emeka, a 39-year-old man, on his right leg. The suspect, who claimed to be a member of a local vigilante group, was apprehended at the scene, and a locally made double-barrelled gun was recovered from him. The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical treatment, while the suspect remains in custody as investigation continues.

CP Danladi Isa commended the officers for their professionalism and commitment, reiterating that the Command remains resolute in its determination to protect lives and property, maintain law and order, and rid the state of criminal elements.

He urged residents of Abia State to continue partnering with the Police by providing useful and timely information that could aid crime prevention and control. The Commissioner emphasised the importance of community cooperation and re-echoed the Command’s public safety slogan: “See Something, Say Something.”

Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency numbers: 08035415405, 08079210004, 08079210005, and 08079210006.

The Abia State Police Command assures the public that all suspects will face the full weight of the law as investigations progress.
