The Director General of the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion, Dr Obiageli Amadiobi, has declared the commitment of her organisation to elevate Imo State University, Owerri, into a leading institution in technology, science and mathematics.
She made this known during the commissioning of the newly established Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office at the university’s ICT complex on 27 November 2025 and her visit together with her team to the Vice Chancellor's office who recieved her with the principal officers of the institution.
Addressing management, staff and students of the institution, Dr Amadiobi stated that NOTAP’s primary mandate includes regulating and registering foreign technology transfers into Nigeria. She explained that the agency ensures that all agreements involving foreign investors protect Nigeria’s interests before any certificate of compliance is approved and signed.
Amadiobi noted that, although NOTAP’s engagement was initially limited to federal universities, the Federal Government has now mandated the agency to extend its reach to state universities as part of efforts to localise technological development and strengthen the national innovation ecosystem.
The retired permanent secretary at the ministry of information and strategy Imo State, further outlined several opportunities that IMU researchers and students can explore through NOTAP, including research fellowships, grants, industry-sponsored projects and global innovation collaborations. She also revealed that NOTAP is supporting laboratory upgrades in science, engineering and chemistry departments nationwide, and is establishing Science Hubs across all geopolitical zones to enhance training in technology and ICT-related skills.
The DG commended the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, describing him as a leader who has made significant contributions to promoting science, technology and innovation for the benefit of the state.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor of Imo State University, Prof U. U. Chukwumaeze, expressed deep appreciation to Dr Amadiobi for remembering her alma mater and for her dedication to national growth.
He added that her achievements bring pride to the university, stressing that “wherever your CV enters, Imo State University has entered.”
Prof Chukwumaeze reaffirmed the university’s commitment to excellence, noting that IMSU has consistently earned national and international recognition across several disciplines.
The number one lecturer in Imsu, assured the NOTAP team that the deans and heads of departments would collaborate closely with the newly established Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office to advance research, innovation and academic development.
Highlighting the institution’s progress, the Vice Chancellor noted that the engineering faculty continues to distinguish itself with outstanding innovations, just as the law faculty and other departments make the university proud.
“We are deeply rooted in research and innovation, and we will make you proud,” Prof Chukwumaeze concluded, thanking the Federal Government for appointing Dr Amadiobi and strengthening IMSU’s technological capacity.
