Citizen Akirika Okoro has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 Owerri Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives under the platform of Labour Party, unveiling what he described as a comprehensive legislative reformation and resuscitation blueprint aimed at improving governance and development within the constituency.
Speaking during the declaration, Okoro explained that his ambition is driven by a desire to reposition legislative representation in the constituency through purposeful and people oriented laws that would enhance development and strengthen democratic institutions.
According to him, his manifesto titled Legislative Reformation and Resuscitation Blueprint is designed to enhance parliamentary efficiency and restore public trust through targeted legislative interventions.
He noted that if elected to represent Owerri Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, his legislative agenda would focus on sponsoring and co sponsoring people oriented bills and motions that would guarantee the safety of lives and property, strengthen institutions, and promote job creation.
Okoro also pledged to facilitate constituency development projects, including youth empowerment programmes, capacity building initiatives and business opportunity workshops that would help young people within the constituency become self reliant and economically productive.
The aspirant further promised to ensure periodic progress reports on federal assignments and constituency activities, stating that he would organise quarterly town hall and village meetings to maintain constant interaction with constituents and improve accountability in representation.
On legislative oversight, Okoro assured that he would ensure the effective monitoring of government programmes and the implementation of the national budget in order to guarantee that projects meant for the constituency are properly executed.
He also emphasised the need to promote local content, creativity and craft development as part of efforts to support indigenous talents and stimulate economic activities within the constituency.
Speaking on healthcare, Okoro said his policy thrust would focus on reducing maternal and child mortality through improved access to quality healthcare services and preventive medical care.
He added that education would remain a top priority in his legislative agenda, stressing that every child and youth must have access to quality education. To demonstrate his commitment to the sector, he disclosed that he had already begun distributing over 100,000 exercise books to pupils and students in public primary and secondary schools across Owerri Federal Constituency and Owerri Zone.
Earlier in his remarks, Okoro described leadership as a catalyst that transforms passive reactions into bold and determined actions capable of addressing societal challenges.
He stated that although Imo State has recorded progress in some areas, there is still much to be done in ensuring that federal representation translates into visible development projects within the state.
According to him, attracting federal government presence through strategic legislative actions, sponsorship of bills and motions, and effective lobbying of federal agencies remains the responsibility of federal lawmakers representing the state.
Okoro said his ambition to represent Owerri Federal Constituency at the Green Chambers of the National Assembly is motivated by his passion to serve the people through productive and meaningful legislative representation.
He also highlighted his background and experience, noting that he has the education, exposure and global contacts required to effectively represent the constituency.
He recalled that his father, the late Mr. L. O. Okoro (OON, MBE), served as Clerk of the old Eastern House of Assembly in Enugu, which comprised present day Imo, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Cross River, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta states, adding that the experience he gained from observing the legislative process from an early stage shaped his understanding of governance.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Chairman of the Labour Party, Mazi Excel Ochiama, who spoke at the event, assured party members and aspirants of a level playing ground ahead of the electoral process.
Ochiama emphasised that the party does not endorse any aspirant, urging those seeking elective positions to work hard to win the support and confidence of the people.
He encouraged Okoro to continue engaging with the grassroots and presenting his vision to the electorate, stressing that the strength of democracy lies in allowing aspirants to freely present their ideas and programmes to the public.
The party chairman concluded by formally acknowledging Okoro’s declaration, noting that the aspirant has fulfilled the constitutional requirements of the party to contest for the position.
