Nigeria returned back to democracy on May 29, 1999 and Imo was not exempted because they also elected an executive governor in the person of Chief Achike Udenwa.
Udenwa came in with his policy program code named "THE TRIPOD VISION" which was anchored on Agriculture, Industrialization and Reorientation. This policy direction of the former governor made some inroads into many of the purpose for which it was formulated. It recorded some success in some while some flopped due to the government's poor implementation approach. Then came little known Chief Ikedi Ohakim who rose to power on the back of the PDP's crisis then. He got the support of the then redemption 98 political family, a political movement of the then Governor (Achike Udenwa). His administration came up with the "Clean and Green" program, a mirror of the Udenwa policy plan.
This program recorded some level of success in the beautification and urban renewal programs plus rural road maintenance anchored by IRROMA.
Though the administration was short-lived but it recorded some measure of success in the aforementioned areas but flopped in human capital development and public workers' welfare, a flop too many.
The Rochas' administration heralded what he termed "RESCUE MISSION" program. The Rochas' administration was torpedoed to power due to the poor citizens and government's relationship that characterized the Ohakim's administration plus the administration's total disengagement from the people that helped to bring him to Douglas House. The Okorocha's Administration was met with high expectations due to almost impossible to come-by promises they made during the campaigns but alas, it was poorly managed due to the high hopes the administration gave to the citizens. This administration performed below the expectations of Ndi Imo due to her insensitive nature and lack of people (average and poor) based programs. It recorded high level official and corporate corruption in the history of the state where the government used friends and cronies as fronts to acquire public properties and launder money.
The Achilles tendon of that administration was an attempt to foist the Governor's son in-law on the people.
Then came Chukwuemeka Nkem Ihedioha's "Rebuild Imo" program. Though in the eyes of the law, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha was never a governor but his inputs to the state needs to be discussed. He came in with a mindset of rebuilding "a shattered state" but was caught in the web of vindictiveness and witch-hunts. It lost the touch of the people's validation or credibility because of the step it took. The administration were prided with so many vindictiveness and divisiveness; a move the Imolites frowned at. Though short-lived but the lessons were well taken.
Then came the "Shared Prosperity Administration". An administration that was gritted with so many criticisms and propagandas. The administration didn't miss her focus nor got distracted rather it went on to work on the real deal as it concerns the people. The major campaign promise was to overhaul our system and the way the government does business, a move it was never deterred to approach irrespective of the harsh criticisms from the opposition elements. It was branded with many names and was accused of many unprintable actions against the citizens; a move that met the brick wall because the people understood the workings of the administration and aligned to it. Unlike the previous administrations, it promised to give the state a great civil service system that will work for the benefit of the state, a move that was met with stiff opposition, many went out to the street to register their detest but later found out that they were being used to achieve some political scores. They resorted to the use of propaganda aimed but was regularly debunked by the government with facts.
Finally, they started encouraging and defending the non state actors and painted it to appear like people being unhappy with the government of the day but unfortunately, they lost control of the criminals they were using to perpetuate evil against the state, a problem we are all thinking on how to stop.
This government has registered her self in the hearts of the people for all her people oriented programs which includes all the yawnings of the society and the citizens. The government's human capital development is now being copied by several state governments and the federal government especially in the Agriculture and ICT programs (the facts are there for verification).
The prompt payment of salaries and subventions are second to none as all civil servants now smile to the banks on the 26th day of every month same as the retired senior citizens. The rural development programs of the state government is in top gear and people are already testifying to it. The health sector is not left out as the government has mapped out huge sum of money which was used to re-equip and revamp our health facilities to bring them to the present 21st century realities.
The education sector has since been the number one issue on the government's To-do list and the results are glaring as the state has improved in the competitive examinations nation wide and has gained back her status as the most enrolled state in all the national and subnational examinations.
The commerce and industry is booming as the government is not leaving our people who are into trades and commerce out. They are being engaged in many government sponsored credit programs where they are not expected to remit back with interests.
Finally, all the administrations that had been at the helm of affairs in our state performed according to their level of understanding of the needs of the people but the shared prosperity administration is performing in line with the relative needs of the people as the present conditions demanded. Let's learn the habit of continuity and to give total support to the government of the day and shun the actions that will denigrate the efforts of the government.
