It was a great moment on Tuesday in Imo State as women from different advocacy groups gathered to make their voices to be heard. The women who turned out in their numbers intensified their campaign in demands for the passage of the reserve seat for the women bill.
The coordinated advocacy was led by the Nigeria League of Women Voters (NILOWV), Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Nigeria Council for Women Societies (NCWS), Association of Women in Trade and Agriculture, Retired Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association, Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Women in Politics Forum (WIPF), alongside other civil society organisations.
The Coordinator of NILOWV , Dr Mrs Nnenna Adadum Oguama in her words said that "women are not just asking, we are demanding for a fair deal for Nigerian women. For too long, our decision making bodies have lacked the perspectives and voices of women. This bill is a step towards fixing our nation
We stand together, united in our quest for equality and justice, we keep pushing until this bill is passed"
In her remarks, the chairperson of FIDA maintained that for decades, women have been marginalized in our decision making spaces.it is time to rectify this injustice. She stated that this bill is a beacon of hope for women's empowerment and a testament to our nation's commitment to equality.
She said "We urge lawmakers to put aside politics and prioritize the interests of Nigerian women
The reserve seat for women bill is not a favor, it is a right.
We will not be ignored, we will not be silenced, we demand action"
The vice chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Chizoba Opara in her speech stressed that women's representation in our decision making bodies has been inadequate. It is time for change.
She maintained that this bill crucial step towards ensuring women have a seat at the table, a voice in decision making and a chance to shape our nation's future.
She noted that they peacefully protested to show their collective commitment to women empowerment.
We urge our lawmakers to prioritize this bill and act now.
