Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a dramatic raid on several clubs and lounges in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Saturday, arresting suspected internet fraudsters.
Among those apprehended was a groom-to-be, who was celebrating his bachelor’s eve with friends at a popular nightclub in the city.
The raid, which took place in the early hours of Saturday, resulted in the arrest of over 50 individuals.
Witnesses reported that the EFCC operatives arrived in multiple vehicles and fired gunshots into the air to control the scene before proceeding with the arrests.
Several vehicles, laptops, smartphones, and other items were seized during the operation.
One eyewitness described the chaotic scene, stating, "We were all having fun when suddenly EFCC agents stormed the nightclubs, firing tear gas and beating people up.
They arrested everyone in sight, including a groom who was just trying to enjoy his bachelor party."
The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the raid, but the operation has sparked significant reactions from the public, particularly regarding the treatment of individuals at the clubs and the broad profiling of attendees as internet fraudsters.
