In a bold move to reshape the agricultural landscape, the Imo State Ministry of Livestock Development convened a high-level stakeholders’ meeting today, bringing together key players across the livestock value chain to deliberate on strategies aimed at bolstering food security, economic growth, and rural transformation.
The strategic engagement, held in Owerri, marked a significant step in the state's drive to leverage livestock development as a tool for combating food insecurity, driving job creation, and stimulating economic activity in rural communities.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Anthony Mgbeahuruike, Honourable Commissioner for Livestock Development, presented a compelling case for an expanded view of livestock agriculture. “Livestock is not just about rearing animals; it is a multifaceted tool for ensuring food availability, empowering rural dwellers, creating employment, and enhancing livelihoods across Imo State,” he stated.
Dr. Mgbeahuruike reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration to revitalise the agricultural sector with a strong focus on livestock. He outlined strategic areas of intervention, including the improvement of veterinary health services, development of pasturelands, implementation of modern animal breeding techniques, and facilitation of farmers’ access to financial support.
He called on stakeholders ranging from livestock entrepreneurs, processors, and animal product marketers to feed mill operators and veterinary professionals to offer innovative suggestions and contribute to building a resilient livestock ecosystem in the state.
The Commissioner further disclosed the Ministry’s vision to institutionalise livestock trade through the strengthening of cooperative societies, enhancement of animal health and productivity, and the encouragement of value addition through efficient processing methods aimed at increasing farmers’ incomes.
Adding further depth to the meeting, Mrs. Jovita Agwu, Technical Assistant in the Office of the Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor, presented the OKOBI initiative. This transformative programme promotes the establishment of group-owned agricultural businesses. She outlined the state government’s support mechanisms such as grant opportunities, advisory services, and access to loan facilities designed to empower stakeholders in the livestock sector and promote sustainability.
The stakeholders’ forum reinforced the Imo State Government’s unwavering dedication to the advancement of the livestock industry as a strategic pillar for economic development and improved standard of living for its citizens.
