Imo State, Nigeria, held an engaging townhall meeting with members of the United Nigerian-Canadian Communities (UNICC) during his official visit to Canada. The event, which took place in Toronto, brought together a diverse group of Imo indigenes and Nigerian professionals eager to connect with home and contribute to the state's development.
The townhall served as an open platform for dialogue, with Hon. Okere addressing two key issues at the heart of his mission: improving security in Imo State and expanding economic opportunities for Imo citizens at home and in the diaspora.
Addressing Security Concerns
Hon. Okere began by acknowledging the security challenges facing Imo State and affirmed governor Uzodimma's commitment to restoring peace and public safety. He outlined the governor's recent collaborations with federal security agencies, local vigilante groups, and community leaders to adopt a grassroots-driven approach to tackling insecurity.
> “We are investing in intelligence-driven policing, community watch programs, and a stronger coordination between state actors and local stakeholders,” he said. “Peace is the foundation of progress. Without security, no investment can thrive.”
He invited imo diaspora professionals to play a role in supporting community-based solutions, including sponsorship of security infrastructure, tech-based monitoring tools, and youth engagement initiatives aimed at reducing crime.
Economic Opportunities and Diaspora Inclusion
In the second part of his address, Hon. Okere laid out a vision for economic revitalization in Imo State, emphasizing sectors like agriculture, technology, manufacturing, and tourism. He detailed new state-led initiatives designed to attract private investment, promote entrepreneurship, and build a skilled workforce.
> “Imo is ripe for growth. From agribusiness in Okigwe to tech hubs in Owerri, there are opportunities waiting to be unlocked,” he said. “We want the diaspora not only to invest, but to help shape the policies and priorities driving this economic transformation.”
He proposed diaspora-targeted incentives, including:
A Diaspora Investment Desk within the Imo State Investment Promotion Agency (ISIPA)
Land access programs for returnees interested in farming, housing, or industrial ventures
The launch of "ImoConnect", a digital platform to streamline partnerships between Imo State and the diaspora
Dialogue and Community Input
UNICC members expressed appreciation for Hon. Okere’s transparency and vision. Several attendees shared concerns and suggestions related to rural development, youth unemployment, Insecurity, infrastructure gaps, and the need for cultural preservation.
Ms. Ada Nwosu, a youth advocate, noted: “This is the first time many of us feel truly engaged by a representative from home. She observed that Honorable Tochi is a differe kind of politician, very humble and accessible.
We want to be part of the solution, not just observers.”
The Vice President of UNICC, Deacon Nath Okoroafor thanked the honorable member for coming by and identifying with imolites.
The townhall concluded with a call to action for all Imo indigenes abroad to remain connected, informed, and proactive in supporting the development of their homeland.
