The Imo State Consumer Protection Council (CPC) under the leadership of Hon. (Dr) Mrs Obioma Okafor has invited members of the general public to participate in this year’s World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) celebration scheduled to take place in Owerri.
In a statement issued by the Director General of the Council, Hon. (Dr) Mrs. Obioma Okafor, the event will hold on Monday, March 16, 2026, by 12 noon at the Imo CPC Auditorium, Area B, New Owerri, adjacent ISOPADEC.
According to the Director General, the annual event is organized to promote consumer awareness and educate the public on their rights and responsibilities in the marketplace.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Safe Products, Confident Consumers,” which focuses on ensuring that goods and services made available to the public meet approved safety standards while empowering consumers with the knowledge needed to make informed choices.
Okafor noted that the programme will bring together stakeholders, regulatory agencies, business operators, and consumers to deliberate on key issues affecting consumer protection and product safety in the state.
She further disclosed that the celebration will feature a number of engaging activities, including goodwill messages from stakeholders, inter-school competitions aimed at promoting consumer education among students, and product exhibitions by manufacturers and service providers. These activities, she said, are designed to deepen public understanding of consumer rights while encouraging businesses to maintain high standards of product safety and quality.
The highlight of the event will be a keynote presentation by Mrs. Uchenna Enyioko, Technological Controller at Nigerian Breweries Plc, who will serve as the Guest Speaker.
The Director General emphasized that the Council remains committed to safeguarding the interests of consumers in Imo State and ensuring that only safe and quality products are made available in the market.
She therefore called on members of the public, consumer groups, traders, manufacturers, students, and other stakeholders to attend the event and join hands with the Council in promoting consumer rights and responsible business practices in the state.
World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated globally every year to raise awareness about consumer rights and to encourage actions that protect consumers from unfair trade practices and unsafe products.
