A philanthropist cum the Founder of Need Foundation and Every Life Matters Humanitarian Foundation, Dr. Chetachi Nwoga Ecton, has called for more inclusive governance in Nigeria, particularly through greater participation of women in politics, while also emphasising the importance of agriculture as a major pathway to reducing poverty and stimulating development.
Speaking on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, located in Obiangwu, Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, Dr. Ecton, who hails from Ahiazu Mbaise, explained that her lifelong passion has always been to support the less privileged and provide a voice for people who are often overlooked in society. According to her, her humanitarian activities are largely focused on practical support that directly improves the lives of individuals and communities.
Dr. Ecton also spoke about the growing conversation surrounding women’s participation in politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that political parties must begin to create more space and fair opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully to leadership and governance.
According to her, women already play enormous roles in society through their responsibilities in homes, child upbringing, family support, and economic activities, and therefore deserve to be part of leadership structures and decision making processes.
“Women are already doing so much in society taking care of homes, raising children, supporting families and contributing to the economy. They should also be part of leadership and decision making,” she stated.
The humanitarian advocate further expressed concern over the increasing level of poverty in the country, noting that many Nigerians continue to struggle in spite of the nation’s abundant human and natural resources. She however maintained that the situation is not beyond remedy if deliberate and strategic actions are taken.
“It is really sad to see the level of hardship many people are facing, but we must not lose hope. There are still ways to build a better country for our people,” she said.
She identified agriculture, education, and wealth creation initiatives as critical sectors that can significantly contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable national development if properly harnessed.
Although she did not directly issue policy advice to government authorities, Dr. Ecton noted that her foundations remain committed to undertaking practical initiatives aimed at empowering communities and supporting individuals who need assistance.
“I know what I can do, I know what I have done before, what I am doing now, and what I still plan to do,” she added.
She further stressed that agriculture remains one of the most reliable tools for economic empowerment and urged stakeholders across different sectors to make more effective use of available resources in order to promote growth, job creation, and improved livelihoods for Nigerians.
