Mrs. Bibian Okere has emerged as the Chairman of the Imo State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) following a bye-election which she was unopposed, to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of the immediate past Chairperson, Dr. Dorothy Nnaji, as a Permanent Secretary in the Imo State Civil Service.
Delivering her acceptance speech shortly after her swearing -in,On wednesday at the NUJ secretariat.Mrs. Okere expressed profound gratitude to members of the association for the confidence reposed in her and pledged to provide purposeful, inclusive, and transparent leadership.
She congratulated Dr. Nnaji on her elevation, describing the appointment as a source of pride for NAWOJ and women journalists across Imo State. According to her, the appointment reflects the rewards of hard work, integrity, and excellence in the journalism profession.
Mrs. Okere assured members that her administration would build on the achievements of the immediate past leadership rather than replace its legacy. She also commended the existing executive council for sustaining the affairs of the association during the transition period and promised to work closely with them to advance the association's goals.
Calling for unity among members, the newly elected Chairperson stressed that her leadership would be all-inclusive and would not discriminate against any member.
"We are one association and one sisterhood. This outcome belongs to all of us collectively," she said, urging members to set aside any differences that may have arisen during the electoral process.
She emphasized the need for women journalists to demonstrate the unity and cooperation they advocate in society, noting that NAWOJ members have a responsibility to lead by example.
Mrs. Okere reaffirmed her commitment to improving members' welfare, promoting professional development, strengthening capacity building, and enhancing the voice of women journalists in Imo State.
She further assured members that her administration would operate an open-door policy, encouraging constructive engagement, honest counsel, and teamwork from both the executive council and the general membership.
The new Chairperson concluded by calling on all members to work together in peace, unity, and purpose to move the Imo State chapter of NAWOJ to greater heights while wishing her predecessor success in her new role as Permanent Secretary.
