The Expanded Global Executive Council of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, comprising members of the Global Executive Committee and State Presidents, has passed a unanimous vote of confidence in the President-General, Senator Azuta Mbata, commending his visionary and result-oriented leadership over the past one and a half years.
The resolution was reached at a one-day retreat of the Expanded Global Executive Council held on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, at the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide National Secretariat in Enugu.
The retreat provided an opportunity to review the organisation’s activities, achievements, challenges and prospects.
This was made known through a statement made available to newsmen by Dr. Ezechi Chukwu
Global Publicity Secretary,
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide
The Council resolved to improve internal coordination, strengthen operational methods and enhance its effectiveness in fulfilling its mandate as the apex socio-cultural organisation of Ndigbo.
At the end of the deliberations, members unanimously commended Senator Mbata’s leadership and the progress recorded under his administration, rating his performance “summa cum laude.”
A major resolution of the retreat was the approval of academic bursaries for 200 students studying Igbo Language in tertiary institutions across Nigeria. Announced by the President-General, the initiative is designed to encourage the study of Igbo, support students pursuing the discipline and contribute to efforts to preserve the language and prevent its extinction.
This pioneering effort will undoubtedly complement the ongoing Ohanaeze Ndigbo Professorial Endowment Chair in select universities for the promotion of research in Igbo language and culture.
The Council described the bursary scheme as a flagship initiative of the administration and a significant step towards preserving and promoting Igbo language, culture and identity.
The retreat also resolved to strengthen collaboration between the Global Executive Committee and State structures, improve communication, establish clearer performance targets and adopt innovative approaches to administration. The leadership pledged to build on existing achievements while addressing identified gaps through collective responsibility and sustained engagement.
