Man Arrested for Allegedly Setting Wife Ablaze in Kogi Over Domestic Dispute

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Jacob Irewa for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, on fire following a domestic disagreement in Lokoja.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m. at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja, Kogi State.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Salisu Afusat, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the suspect was arrested for alleged attempted culpable homicide.

According to the statement, the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received information about the incident and immediately mobilised to the scene, where officers apprehended the suspect.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after the victim burnt some of the suspect’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his permission,” the statement said.

The disagreement allegedly escalated after Irewa threatened his wife, went to his motorcycle to fetch petrol and subsequently set her ablaze.

The victim, however, survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.

The police said the suspect admitted during interrogation that he set his wife on fire.

The command has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the incident, with the aim of establishing the full circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and gathering additional evidence.

The police assured that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
