Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says he will not support Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, for the position of Senate President.
Wike made the declaration on Monday during his appearance on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout, amid an ongoing political disagreement between him and the Imo governor.
Wike questioned Uzodimma’s reported plan to return to the National Assembly after completing his tenure as governor, saying, “I will never support a character of Hope Uzodimma to be Senate President of Nigeria.”
The FCT Minister also alleged that Uzodimma was working to influence the emergence of senators and members of the House of Representatives who would support his reported ambition to lead the Senate. The allegation has not been independently established.
The development comes amid growing differences between Wike and the Progressive Governors’ Forum, chaired by Uzodimma. The forum recently said APC governors would not support political alliances or arrangements capable of weakening the party or affecting its candidates in the 2027 elections.
Uzodimma is reported to be considering a return to the Senate after his tenure as governor ends in January 2028. However, the Senate’s revised standing rules have introduced ranking and length-of-service requirements for senators seeking presiding and principal offices.
The amended rules require senators seeking the Senate President and Deputy Senate President positions to have at least eight years of continuous service in the chamber, while other principal offices are also subject to ranking requirements.
The changes could affect the eligibility of senators returning to the chamber after the 2027 elections, depending on their previous legislative service.
