In a landmark decision, a three-man panel of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal has mandated Multichoice Nigeria to offer one month of free subscription to its DStv and GOtv customers.
The ruling comes after Multichoice was found to have defied previous court orders by increasing subscription rates.
The tribunal, led by Justice Thomas Okosu, also imposed a N150 million fine on Multichoice Nigeria for challenging the court’s jurisdiction. The decision was handed down on Friday in Abuja.
Multichoice Nigeria had raised the prices of its DStv and GOtv packages in May, despite an earlier injunction by the tribunal prohibiting such an increase.
The tribunal's order sought to protect consumers from abrupt price hikes and ensure fair market practices.
Imo news reported that the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal had initially restrained Multichoice Nigeria from implementing the new tariffs and increasing the cost of its products and services, which were scheduled to commence on May 1.
