President Bola Tinubu announced the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
While the President did not disclose the name of the Minister for the new ministry, it is expected that he will forward the nominee's name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
The inauguration event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other cabinet members.
This move follows President Tinubu's approval on September 15, 2023, of the establishment of a Presidential Committee dedicated to reforming the livestock industry and finding long-term solutions to the recurring clashes between herders and farmers in the country.
The committee's formation was in response to a report from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria.
