Senator Osita Izunaso, representing Imo West Senatorial District, has made a profound impact in his first two years in Nigeria’s Senate, combining legislative leadership, constituency development, and strategic advocacy to advance both regional and national interests.
Since his inauguration into the 10th Senate, Senator Izunaso has been appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Market and Institutions, a position he assumed on August 8, 2023. In this role, he has spearheaded efforts to reform Nigeria’s financial markets, aiming to boost investor confidence and stabilize the economy. His leadership has been pivotal in shaping policies that enhance market transparency and regulatory frameworks.
Among his key legislative contributions is a motion demanding investigation into the foreign exchange backlog and the activities of the foreign exchange market, as well as the Central Bank of Nigeria’s development finance programs from 2015 to date. This motion provided the government with the legal backing to take corrective action, reflecting Izunaso’s commitment to economic accountability.
Over his first year alone, Izunaso sponsored five bills and eleven motions, alongside presenting two petitions, showcasing an active legislative agenda focused on economic reform and governance. His efforts have helped attract both local and international investments through public-private partnerships facilitated by his committee, contributing to Nigeria’s broader economic revival.
Senator Izunaso has also been vocal on security issues affecting Imo West and the entire South East region. He courageously advocated for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader, whose arrest process was faulted by the Supreme Court. Izunaso sponsored a motion seeking a political solution to Kanu’s case, arguing that his release would help end the destructive sit-at-home orders that have crippled the Southeast’s economy and social life. This stance underscores his commitment to peace and stability in his region.
Beyond the Senate chamber, Izunaso has demonstrated a deep commitment to his constituents’ welfare. In his first year, he completed two skills acquisition centers in Akokwa and Urualla, providing youths with vocational training opportunities to boost employment and entrepreneurship. He has also been a strong advocate for infrastructure development, facilitating projects in road construction, electrification, and water supply across the twelve local government areas of Imo West.
His efforts in education are particularly notable. Senator Izunaso awarded scholarships to 200 university-bound students from his district, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder access to higher education. Through his Kpakpando Education Foundation, he has extended further scholarships and supported the rehabilitation and equipping of local schools to create conducive learning environments.
Healthcare has also been a priority. He initiated the Kpakpando medical outreach program, targeting vulnerable groups such as widows, youths, and the elderly. This program provides medical supplies to local health centers and supports the rehabilitation of dilapidated healthcare facilities, significantly improving access to quality healthcare in the district.
Senator Izunaso’s impact in the lives of his constituents is perhaps most evident in his consistent empowerment programmes. Within two years, he has distributed hundreds of tools and equipment ranging from sewing machines, grinding machines, barbing kits, welding tools, motorcycles, and vehicles to residents of the senatorial district. These initiatives are not mere political displays but structured efforts to promote self-reliance and reduce poverty in line with federal poverty eradication goals.
His empowerment schemes have extended to include persons living with disabilities, irrespective of their origin. Whether they are from Imo State or from neighbouring areas, Senator Izunaso’s interventions reflect an inclusive philosophy that recognises the dignity and potential of every individual. This approach has earned him admiration as one of the few politicians who lead with compassion and inclusivity.
Senator Izunaso’s impact is amplified by his extensive political experience. First elected to the Senate in 2007 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he later joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) and won the 2023 senatorial election with 78,349 votes, defeating his closest rival from the Labour Party. His victory, however, was met with contestation by the opposition citing electoral irregularities, but Izunaso’s political resilience and reputation for integrity have helped him maintain his mandate.
His long-standing career includes roles such as Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and to the Senate President, giving him a deep understanding of legislative processes and governance. Known for his quiet, gentlemanly demeanor and loyalty to the APC, he commands respect among colleagues and constituents alike.
Senator Izunaso emphasizes regular engagement with his constituents to ensure their voices guide his legislative priorities. In July 2024, he held a town hall meeting to present his scorecard, highlighting his accomplishments and seeking feedback to better serve Imo West. This openness fosters trust and accountability, setting a benchmark for effective representation.
Looking ahead, Senator Izunaso continues to advocate for regional development initiatives such as the establishment of the South East Development Commission and the creation of Orlu State, which he believes will accelerate socio-economic progress in his zone. His holistic approach combines legislative action, constituency empowerment, and strategic advocacy to deliver tangible benefits.
In just two years, Senator Osita Izunaso has established himself as a transformative figure in Nigeria’s Senate. Through legislative reforms, constituency development projects, social welfare programs, and regional security advocacy, he has made a lasting impact on Imo West and the broader Southeast region. His blend of experience, dedication, and results-oriented leadership continues to inspire confidence, making him a pivotal player in Nigeria’s political and economic landscape.
