The Special Adviser to the Governor of Imo State on New Partnership For African Development, (NEPAD) Doris Tony- Anyanwu, and the Honorable Commissioner for Livestock Development, Professor Tony Mgbeahuruike, have commenced visits to Livestock facilities across the 27 Local Governments of the State to acertain the functional situations of the facilities for implementation of the Imo State-NEPAD livestock empowerment project for the youths and women across the state. The project which was recently approved by His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma is set to commence in the 27 Local government areas of the state and will benefit youths and women across the LGAs.
On their visit to Ideato South LGA on the 2nd of September, 2025, the Ideato South LGA chairman Hon Okwara Okechukwu Kenneth warmly welcomed the team with his council members. The Hon Commissioner for Livestock Development, Professor Tony Mgbeahuruike whose Ministry is bringing expertise and supervision to the project explained to the council, the purpose of their visit while Doris Tony- Anyanwu explained the various roles NEPAD has played across the country and beyond in youth and women empowerment. She encouraged the council to take advantage of the programme to alleviate the sufferings of the youth and women in their LGA and she also requested that the LGA chairman and his team should help the programme to succeed in Ideato South LGA.
After the courtesy call, the council leader and other councilors representing different wards in the LGA escorted the team to Abukwa where they inspected the large facility of Poultry, Fishery and Piggery belonging to the Ministry of Livestock Development, Imo State.
The huge facility which has faced severe dilapidation due to years of neglect brings so much promises for livestock production and food security for the people of Ideato and Imo State at large if fully harnessed and properly revived.
The NEPAD team and the Hon Commissioner for Livestock Development Prof Tony Mgbeahuruike proceeded to Nkwere and Nwangele LGAs for inspection of other livestock facilities in the mentioned LGAs. At Nkwere LGA, the chairman of the LGA
Hon Chigozie Chido welcomed the team and took them round the Fishery and Poultry facility in the local government and promised to give the project any assistance it needs to succeed in his local government.
At Nwangele LGA, a tour was also taken to the livestock facilities in the council after exchange of pleasantries with the LGA council boss, Hon Chief Paul Duru and his team and the state team.
These inspections will continue until all the 27 LGAs of the state are covered. The inspection will give the state team an idea of the LGAs that need intervention in terms of facility upgrade and the ones that do not have facilities at all for the programme and this will help the state team to make proper recommendations to His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma before the actual implementation of the project.
The NEPAD Livestock empowerment project will provide the protein needs of the state, solve the problem of food security, create jobs and engage our youths and women in the rural communities after implementation in all the LGAs.
The project will also bring succour to the numerous Livestock facilities scattered around the state which have been abandoned for years by previous governments without use. The Imo State-NEPAD Livestock empowerement project is a programme that will drive the livestock transformation policy of His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma to the grassroot and this will help to boost food security across the LGAs.
