The University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), Umuagwo, Imo State, has recorded another landmark achievement with the successful conduct of its maiden Student Union Government (SUG) election through a secure electronic voting platform.
The historic election, held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, saw 260 accredited students participate in the online voting exercise, making UAES one of the institutions embracing digital technology in student electoral processes.
The development was contained in a press release signed by Mrs. Emmanuella C. Okpara, Acting Coordinator, Information, Public Relations and Protocol (IPRP) Unit, University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo.
Fourteen candidates contested for various executive positions of the Student Union Government. At the conclusion of the exercise, Izuwa Victor emerged as the first elected SUG President of the institution after polling 217 approval votes out of the 236 valid votes cast, having contested unopposed.
Awusaku Chisom was elected Vice President with 197 approval votes.
For the position of Secretary General, Prosper Chimezirim Onuekwusi defeated Dike Bright, securing 142 votes against his opponent's 94 votes.
Other successful candidates include Osunwoke Ijeoma Doris, who emerged Assistant Secretary General with 198 approval votes; Orji Maryann Ozioma, elected Director of Welfare after defeating Wakili Blessing Chizoba by 151 votes to 85; Evoegbu Bright, Director of Finance with 205 approval votes; Chibuzo Favour, Director of Treasury with 208 approval votes; Aliukwu Casmir, Director of Sports with 222 approval votes; Nelson Chinaemerem, Director of Information with 221 approval votes; Obie Grace Chinemerem, Director of Socials with 223 approval votes; and Jumbo Precious, Director of Academic with 219 approval votes and Ikeanyi Chibuike Godson, Director of Transportation.
The electronic voting exercise was conducted seamlessly as accredited students received secure voting links, while the university management provided free Wi-Fi across the campus to ensure uninterrupted participation throughout the election.
The election attracted the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Christopher C. Eze; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Dr. Obinna Adumanya; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Dr. Emmanuel Uzodinma; Acting Registrar, Dr. Olachi Ihejirika; Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ekene Nwabueze; Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Emmanuel Mbanusi; Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee, Comrade Ozoemena Samuel; as well as representatives of the Independent Students Electoral Commission (ISEC).
Speaking after the exercise, the Vice Chancellor and the NANS Joint Campus Committee Chairman congratulated the newly elected executives and commended the peaceful and transparent conduct of the election.
Also addressing the new student leaders, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Dr. Emmanuel Uzodinma, whose office supervises the Student Affairs Unit, urged them to provide inclusive leadership by carrying every student along irrespective of electoral preferences. He encouraged the executives to work closely with the university management in promoting peace, unity and sustainable development within the institution.
Responding on behalf of the newly elected officers, the SUG President, Izuwa Victor, expressed gratitude to the university management for providing a transparent and credible electoral platform. He also thanked the students for the confidence reposed in the new administration and pledged to operate an inclusive and development driven government that would protect and advance the interests of all students.
The successful conduct of the university's first electronic Student Union Government election underscores UAES' commitment to transparency, innovation and active student participation in governance. It also reinforces the institution's determination to strengthen democratic values and build responsible leadership within its academic community.
