A political storm is brewing in Okigwe North Federal Constituency as a prominent youth group has called for the immediate reversal of Hon. Uchenna Agasu's emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election, alleging that the process was marred by irregularities and a fundamental breach of party procedures.
The Okigwe Zone Youth Mandate (OKZYM), led by its National President, Evang. Kelechi Uzomah, has raised serious questions about the legitimacy of Agasu's candidacy . In a press briefing in Owerri, the group argued that Agasu did not purchase the nomination and expression of interest forms to contest the Okigwe North Federal Constituency ticket. Instead, they assert that his ambition was clearly for the Imo State House of Assembly to represent the Onuimo State Constituency .
Contradiction in Aspirations
"We have evidence that he campaigned for the State Assembly position. He printed posters, purchased forms, and participated in the screening process for the Imo State House of Assembly election," Uzomah stated. "It came as a shock to many party faithful including myself when his name surfaced as the House of Representatives candidate" .
The youth leader lamented that allowing Agasu to retain the ticket would be a dangerous precedent, undermining the efforts of loyal party members who followed due process. He noted that aspirants like Hon. Robertson Ekwebelem and the current member representing Onuimo State Constituency, Hon. Ubah James Esile, Rt. Hon. Miriam Onuoha legitimately purchased forms for the federal seat and were unfairly sidelined . Esile, Uzomah added, sacrificed his second-term ambition for the State Assembly in good faith to pursue the higher office .
A Question of Experience
Beyond the procedural irregularities, Uzomah raised concerns about the political maturity of Agasu, suggesting he is politically inexperienced for the Green Chamber . "He is still politically inexperienced and should be given the opportunity to represent Onuimo in the Imo State House of Assembly rather than the House of Representatives. His political experience is not yet adequate for the National Assembly," he argued .
A Blow to Equity and Fairness
The group had previously applauded the party's zoning arrangement which allowed Onuimo LGA to produce the candidate, a move they believed corrected an imbalance against the area . However, they maintain that while the zoning was fair, the selection process was flawed. The group is now calling on Governor Hope Uzodimma and the APC leadership to review the primary outcome and restore confidence in the party's internal democracy .
Dangers Ahead of 2027 for Okigwe North APC Party.
Allowing Uchenna Agasu to retain the APC ticket for Okigwe North Federal Constituency will amount and cause APC political family and party to suffer defeat in the 2027 general election because of the obvious fact that Uchenna Agasu is not the choice of the people of Okigwe North Federal Constituency.
His emergence as the candidate of the APC for Okigwe North Federal Constituency is tearing APC political family apart and I foresee the members of APC working against it's candidate in the 2027 general election, should the party fail to heed to my advice.
