The Department of Development Communication Studies, Imo State University, Owerri, has called on prospective students who are passionate about social impact, community empowerment and positive change to take advantage of the opportunity to study Development Communication Studies at the university.
The department, which is housed in the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, is positioned to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills required to use communication as a powerful tool for social transformation, community development and policy influence.
Speaking on the opportunities available to students, the Head of Department, Dr Ifeoma Ojiakor Umenze, said the programme provides students with the strategic communication skills needed to identify societal challenges, engage communities and develop communication interventions capable of creating meaningful change.
According to her, students in the department are exposed to real world communication approaches that can be applied in areas such as public health, environmental sustainability, human rights, education, poverty reduction and community empowerment.
She noted that Development Communication Studies goes beyond conventional communication training, as students are prepared to understand the needs of communities and communicate solutions that can contribute to sustainable development.
The department also offers students diverse career opportunities after graduation. Graduates can build careers in non governmental organisations, international development agencies, corporate social responsibility, public relations, media organisations, government agencies and other institutions involved in development communication and social change.
Students also have the opportunity to acquire practical experience in multimedia storytelling, media production and participatory community engagement. These skills are increasingly important in a world where effective communication plays a central role in shaping public understanding, influencing behaviour and driving development initiatives.
The department further provides students with access to lecturers and practitioners with experience in communication and the media industry, giving them the opportunity to combine academic knowledge with practical understanding of the communication profession.
Dr Ojiakor Umenze therefore encouraged prospective students to consider Development Communication Studies as a programme through which they can turn their passion for social impact into a meaningful career.
She said the department is ready to welcome students who want to become effective communicators, community development advocates and voices for positive change.
“Communicate for Change” remains the message of the department as it invites prospective students to join a programme designed to prepare them for the communication challenges and opportunities of the future.
Admissions are currently open for the upcoming academic session.
