Finidi George Takes Helm as Super Eagles Head Coach

In a strategic move aimed at revitalizing Nigeria's senior men's national football team, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former Super Eagles winger Finidi George as the new head coach.

The announcement, made via an official statement released on Monday, marks a significant shift in leadership following the approval from the NFF Board.

George, a seasoned 52-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis forward, emerged as the favored candidate after a thorough review by the NFF’s Technical and Development Committee.

Prior to his appointment, George served as an assistant to outgoing coach José Santos Peseiro for a period of 20 months, demonstrating his familiarity with the team dynamics.

His interim stint saw him guide the team through two friendly matches in Morocco, where they achieved a historic victory against Ghana, breaking an 18-year winless streak, albeit followed by a defeat against Mali.

Recognized as part of the illustrious 'Golden Generation' that clinched victory in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and made a mark at the FIFA World Cup finals in the same year, George's distinguished playing career brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

With 62 caps for Nigeria, including appearances in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals, George's credentials are undeniably impressive.

Now entrusted with the task of steering the Super Eagles to success in crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic, George faces a formidable challenge.

With the team currently trailing in third place in Group C of the African campaign, these upcoming matches are pivotal, deemed must-win encounters for Nigeria's football aspirations.
