The Nigeria Police Force, Imo State Police Command, Today Wednesday 13 May, 2026 disbanded the Tiger Base, Lion Squad, and other tactical units as it officially launched the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to strengthen rapid response against violent crimes and enhance public safety across the state.

The event, which took place at the Police Command Headquarters in Owerri, was carried out in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Olutunji Disu, as part of reforms aimed at improving professionalism and accountability in policing.

The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, was represented at the event by his Special Adviser on Security, who commended the Nigeria Police Force for taking decisive steps to strengthen security architecture in the state.

Speaking during the launch, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Garba Bosso, said the new unit was established to ensure a more coordinated and responsible approach in tackling violent crimes in the state.

Bosso explained that the disbandment of Tiger Base, Lion Squad and other similar tactical teams became necessary in order to restructure police operations and restore public confidence in the command.

According to him, the newly created Violent Crime Response Unit will focus strictly on combating violent criminal activities while ensuring that officers operate within the boundaries of the law and respect the rights of citizens.

He stated that the mandate of the VCRU includes swift response to violent crimes, upholding citizens’ rights and dignity, maintaining professional standards, restoring and strengthening public trust in the police, ensuring accountability at all levels, eliminating corruption, and refraining from involvement in civil matters.

The Commissioner noted that the initiative reflects the commitment of the police leadership to promote a people centred policing system that prioritises transparency, discipline, and respect for human rights.

Traditional rulers, government officials, civil society organisations, non governmental organisations, and other critical stakeholders in Imo State were present at the event to witness the occasion.

Bosso further called on residents of the state to support the police by providing useful information that could help security agencies respond quickly to criminal activities.

He assured that the new unit would operate with professionalism and strict adherence to the rule of law in order to guarantee improved security and a safer environment for all residents of the state.
