The Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Physical Planning, Chief Barr. Enyinna Onuegbu, has dedicated the Award of Special Honour presented to him by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Imo State chapter, Comrade Uche Chigaemezu, to Governor Hope Uzodimma, describing the governor’s leadership style as one that has strengthened workers’ welfare and promoted unity among government appointees.
The Award of Special Honour, which was initially scheduled to be presented during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration on May 1, was later taken to the commissioner’s office by the NLC leadership following circumstances that prevented the presentation at the event.
Speaking while receiving the award, Chief Onuegbu described the recognition as a deeply valued honour, especially coming from organized labour, a body known for defending workers’ rights and holding governments accountable.
He said the cordial relationship between the Imo State Government and labour unions under Governor Uzodimma’s administration did not happen by chance, but is a product of deliberate leadership built on mutual respect, sincerity and concern for workers’ welfare.
Chief Onuegbu noted that beyond workers’ welfare, one of the major strengths of the present administration is the healthy relationship existing among the governor’s appointees, which he said has helped to create a peaceful and productive government.
According to him, “Working with Governor Uzodimma is like attending another tertiary institution. This is the first time I have seen appointees work together freely, relate sincerely and even gather comfortably without fear or distrust.”
He explained that the governor created the platform that allowed him and other officials to interact closely with workers across the state, making governance more accessible and people-focused.
The commissioner further pointed to the absence of strikes, protests and disruptions in public institutions in the last six years as evidence of the government’s commitment to workers’ welfare and harmonious engagement with labour.
He commended Governor Uzodimma for prompt salary payments, improved minimum wage, workers’ transportation support and the gradual clearance of pension and gratuity arrears.
Chief Onuegbu thanked organized labour for the honour and praised them for remaining sincere, responsible and supportive in the overall development of the state.
Earlier, while presenting the Award of Special Honour, the Imo State NLC Chairman, Comrade Uche Chigaemezu, said the recognition was in appreciation of Chief Onuegbu’s dedication to workers’ welfare, accessibility and service to humanity.
He disclosed that the commissioner received overwhelming support when workers across the Imo State public service were asked to nominate deserving public office holders for recognition.
Comrade Chigaemezu also appreciated Governor Hope Uzodimma for maintaining a listening ear to labour unions in the state and assured that organized labour would continue to work in synergy with the government for the progress and development of Imo State.
Present during the presentation were the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Angela Ohiri, management staff of the ministry, executive members of the NLC including the State NULGE Chairman and leaders of affiliate unions.
